General Guidelines

Choosing a title

Articles on the Overlook Bay Wiki should be named such that they are easily identifiable. Titles of articles should relate to or match the in-game items they document, unless for special cases.

  • In case an article shares the same name as another article, the title of the article can have a pair of parentheses at its end signifying the exact usage.
    • Both the articles should be interlinked using {{About}} to avoid any confusion. If three or more articles share exactly the same title, a disambiguation page may be created. Disambiguation titles should be titled in the following format: Most common name (disambiguation).
    • Example: Octopus (Pet) and Octopus (Fish).

Introducing an article

Defining Pronouns

Pronouns must be displayed accurately on articles for they reflect a person's gender identity.

  • Pronouns for human NPCs should always be He/Him or She/Her, unless stated otherwise.
    • For NPCs that are not human, "It" should be utilized unless stated otherwise.
  • Pronouns for players must always be They/Them, for we are referring to all players that play Overlook Bay.
  • For non-living items such as food, "It" should be utilized, while They/Them should be used for plural forms such as drills.

Language

The Overlook Bay Wiki undoubtedly supports members from all races, religions, sexualities, and genders. However, the Overlook Bay Wiki, being a site for information about the Roblox game, Overlook Bay must hold on to certain policies in order to keep consistency within the wiki.

All articles on the Overlook Bay Wiki are expected to be written in the American English language. This language convention has been adopted to match the language used in Overlook Bay, that is American English, as well as to keep consistency within articles. This also includes certain terms, such as the usage of "Hood" (American term) over "Bonnet" (British term).

Common differences between American and British English include the following:

  • American: Color; British: Colour
  • American: Organization; British: Organisation

In-game terms, regardless of whether in American or British English, must be documented according to their names in the game without any modifications.

Date Formatting

Dates on the Overlook Bay Wiki must be published in the MM/DD/YYYY or Day-Month-Year format. Numeric date formats such as 29-10-2020 should not be used on articles.

Examples of correct formats:

  • May 29, 2021

Examples of incorrect formats:

  • 29 May, 2021
  • 29-5-2021
  • 29/5/2021
  • 9th of May, 2021

Currency

Currencies on articles should be noted through their respective templates. Any currencies not related to Overlook Bay (excluding Robux), such as real-life currency, should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • While denoting a real-life currency, such as the United States Dollar (USD), it should be formatted in the "Name, Symbol, Value" format.
    • For example, 10 United States Dollars should be denoted as "US$10". Similarly, 1,000 Indian Rupees would be denoted as "IN₹1,000".

Adding Links

While adding links to articles, users must consider judicious usage of links as to not spam the article with external or internal links. Generally, users should only link the first occurrence of a certain item in a single paragraph to its respective page. This, however, is not a concrete guideline. Users should always use common sense while adding links to articles.

External Links

Editors may add external links to articles wherever necessary to explain a certain topic that may not be covered by the Overlook Bay Wiki. External links may also be used to create citations or references, assuming that the references come from trusted sources.

A few trusted and credible websites that may be linked to include:

NOTE: TikTok links may NOT be used as viable references on the wiki due to the site/app's controversial nature. Furthermore, despite Wonder Works Studio having an official TikTok account, (@wonderworks_studios) any citations leading to this account will be subject to removal from the wiki.

Articles or websites owned or operated by official news stations directed towards licensing, finance or lifestyle (such as Forbes), posts created by notable users on the Roblox Developer Forum, websites owned and/or operated by Pinterest or Shutterstock, websites owned and/or operated by the U.S. government may also be added as references to articles. However, these references are subject to moderation.

Formatting Guidelines

To keep consistency within all articles of the Overlook Bay Wiki, it is highly recommended to follow these Formatting Guidelines to ensure that the wiki maintains a proper professional state. These guidelines highlight the proper layout to follow while formatting or creating an article, starting from the top most point of the article and descending down to the end-point.

The Formatting Guidelines are divided into two parts:

Article Layout

Articles should be formatted in a neat way to make sure consistency is maintained across all pages on the wiki. Articles should generally be formatted in the following manner:

  • Notice templates;
  • Infobox;
  • Hatnote (disambiguation, NPC notice, etc.) templates;
  • Main content and introduction;
  • Appearance (for pages related to pets and buildings only);
    • Shiny Appearance (for pages related to pets only);
    • Rainbow Shiny Appearance (for pages related to pets only);
  • Interaction (for pages related to NPCs only);
    • Appropriate bullet points based on the interaction;
    • Section for voice acting with a table (example) wherever needed;
  • Trivia;
    • Should be followed up with the addition of {{Trivia section}} under the heading;
  • Layout Gallery (for pages related to houses only);
  • Gallery;
    • Galleries have their own image priorities, i.e., which images should come first and which should last. Images of the Shiny and Rainbow Shiny form of a pet must be the first images in a gallery, if applicable;
  • Miscellaneous (citations, references, notes, etc.);
  • Navigation boxes;
  • Categories.

Templates

Templates are always good to stylize and format the wiki in a desireable format. Though, they should be used judiciously as some of them, especially those containing images or expensive parser functions, may increase the page's loading time.

  • Infobox templates provide the most valuable and searched for information in a box-like structure towards the right side of the page. They should be used quite judiciously, and an article should never suffer with infobox spam, i.e., overloaded with infobox templates to the brim.
  • Notice templates are generally only visible on the mobile view, excluding a few important ones such as {{Trivia section}} and {{Main}}. They show the status of an article and should be placed either at the top or the bottom of the page.
  • Infoicon templates, excluding the currency templates, should generally only be used in the infoboxes as to give them a neat design. In the main text part of the article, it is generally recommended to either use standard text or links wherever appropriate. Using standard text rather than in-text images also highly improves the mobile experience for readers.
  • Navbox templates are used to provide links to similar articles. They should be added at the bottom of the article, right before the categories.
