Overlook Bay, also known as Overlook RP, is an experience on Roblox developed by Wonder Works Studio, which was released on July 27, 2021 in a paid access stage, costing 25. The game went free-to-play on . It was the first experience in the Overlook Bay franchise and received a sequel, Overlook Bay 2, which released on September 21, 2023 in a paid access stage similar to its predecessor.

Synopsis[]

Overlook Bay gained popularity on Roblox due to various influencers, such as TheMeganPlays (Megan Elizabeth Letter) and WonderWorksZach (Zachary Letter), being actively involved in the game's development. It resembles the likeness of experiences such as Adopt Me! and Welcome to Bloxburg, due to its core focus being on pets and an easy-going economy.

Overlook Bay's player-base and popularity declined in December 2022, due to a series of incidents taking place before and after the Overlook RP Update, which changed the experience's name to Overlook RP and removed core gameplay elements. Lack of proper communication from Wonder Works Studio, misinformation with regards to the update itself, poor handling of social media handles, and the rushed nature of the update led to the update not amassing a large amount of players. Later, Wonder Works Studio re-released the original Overlook Bay as a separate experience in a state prior to the Overlook RP update and eventually announced their plans to release a sequel to the original experience. The re-released experience was meant to transfer over players' inventories from the original experience, however, its release was not stable, leading to data loss.

The popularity of the experience lead to the creation of several spin-off titles, which were published by Wonder Works Studio.

Gameplay[]

First Impressions[]

When a player joined a server in Overlook Bay for the first time, prior to and after the Overlook RP Update, they were teleported to their house and granted three badges. These badges included the Play Overlook Bay, Furry Friend, and the Newbie badge. If players participated in the game's beta access (and joined the game at least once while it was in beta), they would also receive the Beta Tester badge upon joining the experience along with the Corgi pet. Players also receive a random, always-obtainable, non-limited ultra-rare pet, which becomes their first pet. Players also receive a vehicle, the Hunk-O-Junk and a random common personal vehicle, along with a Beginner's Fishing Rod and Greenhorn's Pickaxe (formerly a Baby Blue Rod, Baby Blue Pickaxe, and a Baby Blue Shovel; these were replaced post the Overlook RP Update) upon joining the game for the first time.

When players join Overlook Bay for the first time, they are prompted by a tutorial which teach them the fundamentals of Overlook Bay. This includes teaching players how to customize their Houses, Dress Up, earn Emeralds, and obtain pets.

Inventory[]

The inventory is holds all possessions of the player. A player's inventory is subdivided into 6 parts, the pets category, the collectibkes category, the food category, the vehicles category, the tools category, and the storage category.

  • The pets section houses all the pets that a player owns.
  • The collectibles section houses all collectible items present in a player's inventory. This includes event-exclusive toys and plushies.
    • Not all collectible items are toys, but all toys are collectible items.
  • The food section houses all edible substances in Overlook Bay which can either be consumed by the player or their pet, the latter of which can consume these food items to fulfill the 'Hunger' needs.
  • The vehicles category houses all the vehicles and personal vehicles a player owns.
    • Vehicles can only be spawned outside, while personal vehicles can be spawned and driven anywhere by clicking on the dedicated personal vehicle button present next to the inventory button (symbolized by a backpack).
  • The tools category houses pickaxes, fishing rods, and shovels.
  • The storage category holds all the fishes, crystals, treasure, and artifacts that a player collects while using their tools.

All items in a player's inventory are classified under different rarity types, which are common, uncommon, rare, ultra-rare, legendary, godly, mythic, and special. Items in each category are arranged in a descending order on the basis of the items' rarity, from the rarest item to the least rare item that a player owns. The inventory received an update post the Overlook RP Update.
